Mace Day 2: My Quads are So Sore

Yesterday I jumped headfirst back into training, starting with Mace and then running Sword drills outside a little later in the day. The Mace workout from Onnit is damn good, and I am feeling it all over my body today.

I made sure to eat a little something about an hour before I hit the mat, something small, because when I’m breathing hard through my workout I really don’t like feeling my breakfast in my throat. I ate a banana and some sunbutter, just something to give me a little bit of energy to get through my workout. Yesterday I had a few minutes at the end of my Mace workout that felt hard, and I almost got a little light headed. I know. I know, eat before we train. I’ve had years of this bad habit of training on an empty stomach, and I know what it does now (thanks CPT training!) so I can’t keep up that behavior. Literally most of the hormone issues that I have as a 34 year old, were contributed to by the effects of fasted workouts. So NO MORE!

I pressed play for Onnit Mace day 2, and once again, the warm up was very thorough. They were not messing around when they made this program, they warm your entire body up, from your feet to your wrists and fingers and all the way up the neck. I don’t think that I’ve ever done a workout with such a thorough warm up. Once that was over, I got started on the actual workout bit, which was 8 rounds, 20 seconds on and 10 seconds of rest, of various moves to target the entire body. We did 8 rounds of sit ups with the macebell on our chests, 8 rounds of back squats, 8 rounds of planks picking up the mace, 8 rounds of cleans. I’m sore. I thought I was kinda sore before, but I am really sore now.

I’ll be doing my Valkyrie workout here shortly, but I need more food first. The Hobbit life is coming for me now, and I have to eat multiple breakfasts so I can get both workouts in. It’s all good, more food= more muscle, and for someone like me who is chronically undereating, it just means that the demands on my body will demand more sustenance.

The Valkyrie workout later today has me filled with a small amount of trepidation. It’s Leg Day. We’re doing Lower Body and Boxing, which yes is usually very fun and enjoyable and I remember thinking this workout was awesome when I did it the first time. It is definitely still awesome, but my legs are already so sore! I’m whining, I know. I’ll still get it done.

I’m adding even more training into the mix too, because I’m maybe a little nutty, maybe a few screws loose upstairs. But the Colorado trip is a month and a half away now, and we’re hiking a mountain with 2700+ steps and I want to make it to the top. It’s probably going to be chilly, which will add in another factor to climbing the mountain. So my plan is to add my loaded daypack to my walks with Yrsa. Of course today it had to freeze and we got 3 inches of snow overnight, so I’ll also be walking in my heavy boots. My legs might fall off by the end of the day, but I’ll be damned if I don’t get to the top of that mountain next month.

Yes, this means I’m essentially doing 3 workouts a day. I know, it’s a lot. I’m not trying to burn myself out, but I do want to be prepared for the hike. I can’t walk Yrsa every day anyway, because the weather here is too erratic, but we will be going for it today. We need to stretch our legs a bit and get to steppin’, and the cold exposure is good for me. Even though I will absolutely be whining about it later.
