August 22: Repairing Myself

Yesterday, Sam- creator of Valkyrie Squad and The Micro Gym, found out I hurt myself. What makes her amazing, is how she responded. Instead of well wishes- she sent me a workout link to her YouTube, with a core workout meant to stabilize and rehab the abdominal wall and lumbar. I had literal watery eyeballs, because here is this trainer, designing programs and running this gym and doing all this work, and she still took time out of her day to provide actual help to me.

As a mother, I’m baffled as to why we women don’t get offered 12 weeks of physical therapy after pregnancy and having a baby. We SHOULD. The weight of baby dropping down low slowly over the last few months wreaks utter havoc on our abdominal muscles and our hips, the weight pulling on muscles and causing compensation in the pelvis, which leads to literal years of back weakness and pain. Not to mention abdominal separation- like they literally split in half to accommodate baby… Nobody ever told me that this would happen after one, let alone three full term pregnancies. My youngest is about to be three years old in a few days and I’m still “recovering” from carrying her, my abdominals still separated and wholly weak, my pelvis still tilted and hips still tight from the compensation that I don’t realize I still do.

And then there’s Sam, who has watched my dedication to this idea of becoming a Valkyrie, and even though squad wont start for a couple weeks yet, she’s seen me doing my pregame workouts, and was immediately there with a solution to my pain and the root of the problem. I want to hug her so badly!

I haven’t gotten my yoga blocks yet, so I used a rolled up towel to prop myself up for the moves in the video, and oh my goodness. You guys, the relief I felt doing toe taps with my hips propped up, the engagement I felt in my core! I didn’t know THAT was how it was supposed to feel! The pelvic tilt I have was really preventing me from getting the full core engagement I was meant to have during those exercises and I had NO CLUE until now.

I’m getting blocks and more resistance bands this weekend, I found these on Amazon and I’m so stoked to be getting my gear assembled for Valkyrie Squad! Look at the moon phases! I’m going for full Night Court look, naturally.
